Our Dragon: David Letele
David Letele is a role model for his community and a shining example of the power of determination and hard work. He is committed to helping others achieve their health and wellness goals, and his message of hope and perseverance has touched the lives of countless Kiwis. Once weighing 210 kilograms, Letele now weighs less than half of that. He achieved this transformation through hard work and dedication and was fuelled by the goal of turning his life around. Dave now works tirelessly to motivate others to deal with the challenges of obesity.
He set up BBM Motivation in 2014. BBM runs programs to help people lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way. It has a particular focus on obese people that have given up on life because of their circumstances; many have diabetes, other physical illnesses, and mental health-related issues. His work includes setting up free boot camps across Auckland that run almost every day of the week, free gyms in Manukau, New Lynn, and Tokoroa, a food share in Wiri, a community kitchen, and a social supermarket in Tokoroa. In November 2017, Letele received a special honour award at the Pacific People’s Award in Manukau and in 2022, he was the Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year.
He is also a Life Coach and Motivational Speaker.
THE SOCIAL PURPOSE ORGANISATIONS
For the Love of Bees works to catalyse the transformation of food systems for good. By modelling and teaching restorative horticulture, they inspire and effect collective change from the grassroots to government to achieve better health, better equity in our food systems and better care for our environment.
Last Chance Project restores the mana of the men of Aotearoa. By providing a safe space for healing and nurturing through manaakitanga, fostering inter-generational wellbeing and maximising potential, men who are struggling are able to positively and sustainably transition to new chapters of their lives.
The Lucy Foundation is a disability-led Kiwi charity that is actively transforming the global coffee industry through inclusive, ethical and environmentally regenerative trade from farmer (Mexico) to consumer (Aotearoa). Their Seed Training Program supports young people with intellectual disabilities in Kirikiriroa (Hamilton) to attend paid work experience as part of the coffee value chain.
